Seong Gi-hun — Player 456 — is the title character of Netflix's "Squid Game." Played by Lee Jung-jae, Gi-hun is an unlikeable protagonist who is down on his luck, a terrible father and a generally terrible person. But when the games begin, Gi-hun's story is a study in humanity and sacrifice.
What Happens in Season 3?
When Gi-hun returns for Season 3 of "Squid Game," he's a man on the edge, desperate to make sense of a world that has let him down — and who he feels has also wronged his daughter in particular. The season ends in a bloody, tragic finale.
At this point in the game, Gi-hun is faced with a difficult choice: He can save himself and let an innocent child die — Kim Jun-hee's newborn baby — or he can save the baby and die in the fall from the tower. But Gi-hun is finally a man of sacrifice at this point. He has gone from selfless to selfless.
Gi-hun presses a kiss to the baby's forehead, picks her up and sets her down at his feet for the camera. "We are not horses," he says. "We are humans." Then, as the camera pans away, Gi-hun falls from the tower, dead. But his sacrifice is a commentary on the series as a whole.
What are the costs of redemption, and how do we get there?
Gi-hun's death has a number of repercussions in the aftermath of the games, not least of which is the fact that he has a daughter living in Los Angeles. Here, the Front Man can be seen handing her Gi-hun's winnings and Player 456 bloodied jacket.
Gi-hun is a hero, but he is a tragic hero. His end is a cautionary tale about the choices we make and the way they play out. In the end, "Squid Game" is a series about the cost of everything, and how we get to this point is a large part of its appeal.
Seong Gi-hun in "Squid Game" Season 3 deserves a better fate than being burned alive, but director Lee has a bigger picture in mind. Here's what his death as Player 456 means.
If there's one thing Seong Gi-hun taught us, it's the power of sacrifice. Unfortunately, his selfless act did not outweigh the evil in the heart of man. However, his death was still a blow to the morality of humanity.
