Netflix’s smash hit show had to deal with another scandal recently after the release of its second season. This time the trouble involved Park Sung Hoon, an actor with a prominent part in the new episodes. Park recently posted on Instagram a picture of himself holding the cover of an adult parody of the show—and fans were not amused.
And Hwang Dong Hyeok, the director of “Squid Game”, also lambasted Park. “It was so unpleasant to see,” he said. Though he recognised that such adult parodies are common overseas, he was upset that they could tarnish his show.
The parody’s content, which is graphic and contains a violent theme, did not sit well with some fans. In response to the uproar, Park’s management company said the post had been accidental. He had received so many direct messages on social media, they said, that he mistakenly published the image while sifting through them. The actor said he was shocked, and sorry, by what had happened.
The agency later said that the picture had been stored in Mr Park’s photo album having been passed on to a staff member. This, too, bewildered some fans, who found the explanations inconsistent. Several said they were alarmed by how the episode was being dealt with and added that it was hard to keep both a show and its leading man in a good light. The whole incident may serve as a reminder of how rapidly online attention shifts—in this case from an actor, however briefly, to the show he stars in.
