Why Park Gyu-young Refused to Tell Anyone Her Squid Game Role
In a recent interview, Park Gyu-young revealed that she did not tell her family and friends which character she played on Squid Game. She didn’t even tell her costar Jung Ho-yeon, who portrayed a character from North Korea, who she played.
Gyu-young said, “My friends kept guessing my role, thinking I'm a participant or a police officer. I couldn’t talk about the story for over a year. I didn’t even tell my parents.” Now that the world knows, she can spill a little more about her character, and most importantly—her name.
She explained, “The director, Hwang Dong-hyuk, gave me the name ‘Sae Byeok,’ meaning “new beginnings” I think it was to signify that Jae Hyuk found hope even in his darkest moments. “No Eul,” Dong-hyuk wrote the character breakdown and the brief description was that she represents a descent into hell. So, I think that’s how Dong-hyuk envisioned these characters, so hopefully the audience sees the characters through that way.”
